A place in Sharjah’s knowledge landscape

Sharjah Book Authority identifies six public-library locations: Sharjah Cultural Square, Al Dhaid, Dibba Al Hisn, Kalba, Khorfakkan and Wadi Al Helow. Its service overview includes collections, catalogues, membership, borrowing, spaces and activities. This page describes the network rather than assigning every service to every branch. The libraries’ own site supplies branch and service information; confirm the selected branch’s current arrangements before travelling.

What a learner can investigate

The educational value of a public-library network includes repeated access. A child who can return regularly can develop a reading routine, while a student can learn to turn an assignment into a search strategy. Discuss how a catalogue query differs from browsing a shelf and why a title, subject heading or author name may lead to different results.

For research, distinguish availability from suitability. A source can be easy to find but too old, too general or written for another purpose. Encourage students to explain why they chose a source, what it supports and what it cannot establish. Libraries make this reasoning practical because a search can be revised in response to what the collection actually contains.

An independent learning route

Independent learning route: prepare a small reading plan with one book for enjoyment, one resource connected to a current lesson and one unfamiliar subject. Use the catalogue to test whether the plan is realistic, then ask a librarian about an alternative when the first choice is unavailable. Keep a brief record of what was read and one connection between the three choices.

Before organising a class visit, confirm branch contact details, membership or borrowing conditions, group access and any reserved-space requirements. Different branches may offer different practical arrangements. A network-wide description is not a promise of a particular event, seat or room on the day the family intends to attend.

Plan around a clear learning purpose.

Define the age group, subject, language, visitor number and intended outcome, then ask the venue about access, booking, current hours and charges. A description of collections or facilities does not establish unrestricted availability to every visitor.

Before a visit, prepare a question; during it, gather observations; afterwards, discuss what changed in the learner’s understanding. A teacher can connect the experience to a small classroom task with clear evidence. These suggestions are not booked institutional programmes or existing collaboration agreements.
